The Flavian Amphitheather, worldwide known as Colosseum, is listed among the New 7 Wonders of the World and is probably one of the most visited historic sites in Italy. It was completed in the year 80 A.D. and used to house spectacles and contests, the gladiator fights being the most renowned among them. The Colosseum was abandoned and forgotten for a long time after the fall of the Roman Empire, then turned into a cemetery and a fortress. It was badly damaged by earthquakes and a slow restoration is going on nowadays.
