Het gebied rondom de Spaanse Trappen is één van de drukste delen van Rome. In aanvulling op de belangrijkste attractie (de beroemde trappen) biedt dit gebied designerwinkels, restaurants en bars.

Het plein Piazza di Spagna ligt onderaan de trappen die oorspronkelijk werden vernoemd naar de Spaanse ambassade op het plein. Het concept voor de Spaanse Trappen is ontstaan in de 17e eeuw door de eigenaars van de Franse kerk Trinità dei Monti, die de kerk wilden verbinden met het plein.

Op het plein aan de voet van de Spaanse Trappen bevindt zich een prachtige fontein in de vorm van een kleine boot, genaamd de Barcaccia fontein. Letterlijk vertaald, de Fontein van de lelijke boot. Zowel toeristen als Romeinen verzamelen zich rondom de fontein en u kunt de trappen op om de fontein te bekijken.
